Korean-born soprano Josephine Lee is a versatile performer and dedicated voice teacher whose career spans opera, oratorio, concert repertoire, Baroque music, and art song. She made her debut at San Francisco Davies Symphony Hall as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana and has performed at venues including Stanford Bing Concert Hall, UC Berkeley, Carmel Mission Basilica, Santa Cruz Holy Cross Church, Seoul Arts Center Opera House, and Gangneung Art Center. She currently sings as a full-time chorus member with the San Francisco Opera.
Ms. Lee has appeared as a soprano soloist with numerous ensembles, including the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, Stanford Symphony Orchestra, I Cantori di Carmel, Gangneung City Symphony Orchestra, and Korea Coop Orchestra. She is also an active recitalist and concert soloist, performing throughout the United States and Korea.
Her operatic roles include Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Laurette (Le Docteur Miracle), Flaminia (Il mondo della luna), and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni).
A passionate interpreter of Baroque music, Ms. Lee has performed numerous cantatas of J.S. Bach as a soloist with the Cincinnati Bach Ensemble (The Bach Ensemble at St. Thomas) and served as the featured soprano soloist for I Cantori di Carmel’s Vocal Arts Academy in 2024.
Ms. Lee’s awards and recognitions include winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, San Francisco District (2014), receiving the Western Region Encouragement Award, the Grace B. Jackson Prize at the Tanglewood Music Center, third place in the National Opera Association Vocal Competition, and the Italo Tajo Memorial Award from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She also received the Mercer Scholarship for German language study in Germany, where she spent the summer of 2013 in Berlin.
She was selected as a soprano fellow atTanglewood Music Center in two consecutive years (2011–2012), a Professional Stern Fellow at SongFest, and participated in the Montecito International Music Festival and CCM Spoleto (Italian study).
Her voice is familiar to Korean audiences through recordings of the Opening Theme and Mishil Theme for the popular historical drama Queen Seondeok, which topped national television charts and received critical acclaim.
As an educator, Ms. Lee has served as adjunct faculty at Seoul National University, Kookmin University, Kyunghee University, Sejong University, and Kangnam University, and has taught young singers at major arts high schools in Seoul, Incheon, Kyunggi, and Ulsan.
Since 2019, she has been a founding member of Ensemble Lyrique, an ensemble performing contemporary Korean art songs composed by Mirae Hwang and traditional classical repertoire arranged for soprano and ensembles by Ms. Hwang.
Ms. Lee holds a DMA and MM from University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and a BM (Summa Cum Laude) from Seoul National University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Seoul Arts High School.

서울대학교 정기 오페라 모차르트의 '돈 조반니'에서 돈나 안나 주역을 하였고 뿔랑의 오페라 "까르멜 수녀들의 대화", 비제의 코믹 오페라 "기적의 의사", 몬테바르디 오페라 "오르페오", 하이든 오페라 "달의 세계"를 공연하였으며 바흐에 대한 남다른 관심으로 신시내티 바흐 앙상블과 수차례 바흐 칸타타를 협연하였다. 2013년 젊은 여성 작곡가 Rebecca Larkin의 연가곡 Portals을 녹음한 것이 2014년 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards 콩쿠르 파이널에 진출하였으며 International Alliance of Women in Music's (IAWM) Search for New Music 콩쿠르에서는 스무살 이하 작곡가 부문 (the 21 and younger category) 에서 영광상 (Honorable Mention) 을 수여하기도 하였다. 박사과정 재학 시에 Graduate Assistant로 비전공자들을 위한 성악 강의 (Voice Class)와 학부전공생을 위한 딕션 수업 조교, 및 비 전공자 성악 개인 지도를 하였다.
유학 시절 미국 주요의 오페라 회사들의 음악감독들을 초청하여 심사를 하는 신시내티 음악대학교 오페라 장학금 콩쿠르(CCM Opera Scholarship Competition)에서 Italo Tajo Memorial Award를 수상하여 전액 장학금과 만불의 상금을 받았으며 이후에도 두 해에 걸쳐 파이널리스트에 진출하였다. 2013년에는 신시내티 음악대학에서 성악과 학생들을 상대로 여름방학 동안 외국어 공부를 본토에서 배울 수 있도록 장학금을 지원하는 Mercer Fund Scholarship의 수혜자로 발탁되어 독일에서 독일어 공부를 하기도 하였다. 2011년과 2012년, 두 해에 걸쳐 유명 국제 음악 페스티벌 중 하나인 탱글우드 음악 센터(Tanglewood Music Center)에 소프라노 펠로우로 참가하여 그 해 가장 우수한 성악가에게 주어지는 Grace B. 또한 작곡가 황미래, 피아니스트 김유경, 바이올린 한규현, 첼리스트 이영은, 플루티스트 오은지와 함께 "앙상블 리릭"을 창단하여 현대 창작 한국가곡을 널리 알리는 데에 힘써왔다.
"아름다움을 붙잡다"라는 뜻의 나담 (拏 炎) 이라는 예명이 있으며 현재는 미국 샌프란시스코 베이지역으로 이주하여 2025-2026 시즌부터 샌프란시스코 오페라 코러스 풀타임 정단원으로 활동하고 있으며 2026년 포켓 오페라가 주최하는 오페라 '나비부인' 에서 초초상 역(커버)으로 데뷔할 예정이다.
