Korean-born soprano Josephine Lee (formerly, YoonGeong Lee) is a versatile performer and dedicated voice teacher. She is active recitalist and concert soloist, performing throughout the United States and Korea.
Ms.Lee made her debut at San Francisco Davies Symphony Hall as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana and has performed at venues including SF Herbst Theatre, Stanford Bing Concert Hall, UC Berkeley Hertz Hall, Carmel Mission Basilica, Santa Cruz Holy Cross Church, Seoul Arts Center Opera House, Gangneung Art Center, Youngsan Art Hall, Seoul Arts Center Recital Hall and Sejong Chamber Hall, appearing as a soprano soloist with numerous ensembles, including the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra, Stanford Symphony Orchestra, I Cantori di Carmel, Gangneung City Symphony Orchestra, and Korea Coop Orchestra.
Ms. Lee’s awards and recognitions include winning the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions San Francisco District (2014), receiving the Western Region Encouragement Award, the Grace B. Jackson Prize at the Tanglewood Music Center, third place in the National Opera Association Vocal Competition, and the Italo Tajo Memorial Award from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She also received the Mercer Scholarship for German language study in Germany, where she spent the summer of 2013 in Berlin.
She was invited to Tanglewood Music Center in two consecutive years (2011–2012) as a soprano fellow and participated in Songfest as Professional Stern Fellow and the Montecito International Music Festival with full scholarships.
Her operatic roles include Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Laurette (Le Docteur Miracle), Flaminia (Il mondo della luna), and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and also actively performed J.S. Bach's cantatas with the Cincinnati Bach Ensemble (The Bach Ensemble at St. Thomas).
Her voice is familiar to Korean audiences through recordings of the "Opening Theme" and "Mishil Theme" for the historical Drama Queen Seondeok, which topped national television charts and received critical acclaim.
In 2019, Ms. Lee co-founded Ensemble Lyrique, an ensemble that performs contemporary Korean art songs by Mirae Hwang as well as traditional classical repertoire arranged for soprano and ensemble. As a passionate recitalist, she continues her art song project My Song Book Series, introducing art songs from different languages, eras, and composers.
As an educator, Ms. Lee has served as adjunct faculty at Seoul National University, Kookmin University, Kyunghee University, Sejong University, and Kangnam University, and has taught young singers at major arts high schools such as Seoul Arts High School, Incheon Arts High School, Gyeonggi Arts High School, and Ulsan Arts High School.
Ms. Lee holds a DMA and MM from University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where she studied vocal pedagody as cognite and achieved Graduate Assistantship, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Seoul National University and Seoul Arts High School.
She currently sings as a full-time chorus member at San Francisco Opera and will cover the role of Cio-Cio-San from Puccini's Opera 'Madama Butterfly' at Pocket Opera in 2026.
